RFX (Refractive Film Index) redefines how our methods of looking affect our perceptions of seeing. Through found footage and video manipulation, light and shadow are granted new traits from the mediums and apparatuses they interact with. The index is embodied by independent submissions from artists, designers, and students that seek out natural, artificial, and atmospheric instances of phenomena.

logo
the logo and the accompanying motion takes inspiration from the actual graph behind the Refractive Index, (the measurement of how much light bends, or refracts, when it transitions between different transparent media; water, glass, plastic, i.e.), a film reel, and display graphics on a film camera viewfinder. The thin lines that form the axes of the graph also begin to spell out the acronym RFX, while the central rangefinder keeps rotating and reeling in the motion of the logo.
Snippets
Short video explorations that depict the variety of submissions to RFX. Experiments with lighting, layering, analog mediums, projection are all featured as examples for RFX submissions.
animated poster
Expanding of the motion of the logo, the poster depicts the refractive index diagram a little more literally, using clips from the finished snippets to articulate how the top side of the diagram, or “incoming light” has an effect of the bottom projection, orĀ “refractive index” itself.
